The headline is the most important part of writing an article.
It’s the thing people see first and determines whether the reader will want to read the rest of your article.
It’s just like when you see another person that you might be interested in. Depending on how attractive you find them, you might decide to approach them or not.
Let’s be real,
we all wish that attraction was purely about personality.
What’s inside should be more important than what you see first, but the truth is, if we don’t like what we see at first sight, we won’t typically bother to talk to them to find out about the rest.
Same goes with the headline. If we don’t find it intriguing or the least bit interesting, we usually won’t bother to read the rest of it.
The headline needs to grab the reader’s attention and make them want to know more.
Here are six simple secrets that will ensure that people reading your headline will read the rest of your article:
1. Use numbers & lists
Using numbers in the headline makes people think of efficiency and simplicity.
It gives the reader the impression that what they are about to read is concise and won’t take forever.
When everything is nicely numbered in a list, people feel like they have a better overview and it gives them a sense of comfort and feelings of ease, which makes them much more likely to read the entire thing.
It gives the appearance that the article is easily digestible and that they don't have to look for a long time to find what they are looking for.
It generally makes everything seem more organized and clearer.
2. Use triggering and intriguing words
Make sure to use simple trigger words, such as Why, What, Who, When or How.
These words will add power to your writing and give it dimension.
On top of that, using intriguing words that hint to people that you`re about to let them in on a secret or something exclusive, will have them at your fingertips in no time.
Ways to do this are, for example: “The Mystery Of How People Choose What Article To Read Revealed” or “5 Little Known Ways To Grab Your Reader's Attention”
3. Use questions
Seeing a question in the headline makes us want to know more. It tends to receive far more attention than one containing a statement.
Something happens in our brains when we see a question mark that makes us want to know more.
For example: “Are you struggling to get everything done during the day?” is going to be more effective than “How to stop struggling to get everything done during the day”
Mixing the question with a problem readers have is also a great way to grab the reader’s attention.
4. Comparison to create desire
Giving people someone to compare to gives them something they can resonate with and strengthen the desire.
This is why some ads or articles use famous people in them.
It encourages them to use their imagination and feel like this product or thing that is talked about gives them a chance to be like that famous person.
People like to imagine how their idols act and look.
For example: “How to dress like …(Famous person)…“,or “How to feel as strong as a bodybuilder”
5. Offer your reader to overcome a problem & be specific about it
People will read your article if you have a problem you can solve for them. There needs to be some conflict that needs to be resolved. If this applies to people, there is no reason for them not to keep reading.
They need to see the value in reading your article.
Tell the reader exactly what your article has to offer and what’s in it for them.
If people don't see the value in what you are offering, they won’t want to keep reading.
Be specific about who you`re talking to and why this will help them.
6) Make a promise
People need to believe that there is something to be gained from reading your article, a new insight or knowledge they didn’t have before.
Show readers what they’re about to miss if they don’t keep reading, such as “5 things you should really know about …” or “What most people don’t know about …”
The Magic Formula
The tricks we talked about together create a tried and tested formula that has produced countless successful headlines.
Number or trigger word + Adjective + Keyword + Promise
Examples:
“5 unbelievable ways to make money instantly”
“How you can effortlessly get beautiful skin in 4 weeks”
Make sure you take enough time and effort to create the perfect headline to grab the reader’s attention.
The hours you spent writing your article won’t be of any use if the headline is bad and makes people not want to read the rest of your article in the first place.
