Have you ever read an ad or article just to get to the end of it not knowing what the point was?
It's like reading a story and the tension builds up, you want to know what happens next, you can't stop reading, and then…
Nothing.
The story is done. Nothing happened!
What was that?
You expected a killer ending but instead got the disappointment like when you're about to take a big bite from your favorite sandwich but then realize that there is not a single topping inside of it.
You`re left hanging, all stirred up and confused!
A missed Call To Action works in a similar way.
It's a huuuge opportunity wasted.
What do I do now? You might be asking yourself at this point.
An ideal Call To Action keeps you glued to the words so you can't stop reading, makes you want to take the next step, and converts the built up tension into action.
Once you know how to do this, you'll have the reader at your fingertips like a dog with a piece of steak and be able to get them to take almost any action you want.
Step #1: Let's take things slow.
Just like in dating, we need to be patient and don't rush into things immediately.
It should be more like a well thought through play than a racecar drive.
Asking them to be your partner the first time you see them will prooobably scare them off.
So let's NOT do that.
Let's take a few steps back and slow down.
We need to start by giving them an introduction, showing them some value, and build some tension.
There needs to be a hook, they need to hear something they care about, why should they take action, what's in it for them?
Step #2: Keep it to the point, short and clear.
A Call To Action doesn't have to take forever.
Keep it short and to what you actually want them to do.
No need to talk around in circles, just say what you want.
Again, dating is no different. You know what you want from the other person, so why beat around the bush for too long.
All this will do is get them to slowly lose interest in what you have to say.
Just get to the point. It's not that hard!
Step #3: Don't be vague.
In a Call To Action, you want to be as detailed as possible.
The reader needs to understand what you want them to do.
If you leave them confused they will probably not want to take any action.
It's like trying to get someone to go on a date with you. If you tell them, “Let's go do something sometime” the chances of you actually meeting them is looow. Instead, be exact about what you want and when. Saying instead, “Let's have dinner next tuesday at 6pm at this location …” will make it much more likely to get that date to happen.
The same goes with a Call To Action. You need to tell the reader exactly what you want from them and when…NOW.
Say something like:
Schedule a call by clicking here NOW
Book a course here NOW
Take this QUICK online survey NOW to get in touch.
Step #4: Don't give them more work or send them to another page.
Telling the reader to visit your homepage for more information is NOT a good Call To Action.
Most people are lazy.
They don't want to do any extra work, they have enough on their plate already.
The easier it is to take the action, the more likely they are to do so.
So don't ask them to read or look at anything else, just give them a clear thing to do or fill out that is easily accessible and doesn't take much time.
SPEED is KEY.
Step #5: Don't ask for the entire order.
Don't immediately bombard them with a bunch of questions in your form.
Make it short, get their contact info, maybe a question about the problem they have, and leave the rest for the actual call.
You wouldn't just go up to someone you like and ask about how they want their entire future to look like, would you?
Don't scare them away!
Leave some questions to be answered for the next date.
If a prospect is ready to take action and then comes to find a million questions after they click the action button, they will prooobably just close the page…
That's what most of us would do!
